LATEST NEWS:

Impressive new management team short of luck.

Cricklade Town 3 Ross Town 2

On Saturday 23 December Ross Town travelled to Cricklade, near Swindon, and were very unfortunate to come away without a point. Despite two players failing to turn up on the morning of the game the rest of the squad put on a fine performance. Conditions were not not good for free-flowing football and the condition of the pitch deteriorated as the game progressed.

Town started well with a well taken goal by Derek Roberts after 8 minutes, and increased their lead whwn Wooding netted from an acute angle to make it 2-0 before half time.

But two slack moments in defence allowed Cricklade back in the game, and despite having the better of the game, the home side scored the winner in the 90th minute to cruelly condemn Town to a defeat they certainly did not deserve.

Cheltenham Saracens 2 Ross Town 0

On Monday 26th December Ross Town took the short trip to Cheltenham, and with a depleted team, put up a fine show against one of the favourites for promotion, only to fall to Ross old boy Andrew Sherlock. Sherlock put the home side two up after 15 minutes, and a rout was on the cards. But this team, under the temporary management of Adam Bridges and Spud Jenkins, fought back heroically, and with luck, could have gained a point. In a good all-round performance, Sam Loftus, in his first game after a long absence through injury, was outstanding in defence.

Ross Town 2 Hook Norton 3

On Saturday 30th December Ross Town entertained mid-table Hook Norton. The pitch was in reasonable condition at 10 am but very heavy morning rain made it became very soggy by kick off. As both sides were keen for the fixture to be fulfilled the referee allowed the game to go on.

In a free-flowing game under difficult conditions, Town went behind on 5 minutes, equalised on 18 minutes, fell behind again on 24 minutes, and pulled back level on 40 minutes. The second half was played under constant rain, with a torrential downpour and sleet to add to the players’ problems. With just five minutes to go Town’s bad luck reared its head again; under heavy pressure from Ross for most of the second half, the visitors broke away and scored the winner with five minutes to go. The game was a credit to both sides under dire conditions.

Despite the losses, great credit must go to stand-in manager Adj Bridges and his captain Spud Jenkins who have got the side playing their best football of the season. Surely victory is not far away for this improving team.

Ross Town are at league leaders Lydney Town on New Year’s day and away to Old Woodstock Town on Saturday 6th January.

Ross Town is keen to seek new sponsors to help them bring success to the club in the new year, and invite everyone to a Race Night at the Sports Centre Pavilion on Saturday 20th January, 7.30pm,following the home game against Banbury United Reserves.
