Teams for 2007-08 season

Further to last month's announcement, it has been decided that eight teams will be entered in the coming season: four men's and four ladies'. A few of these will comprise only university students in the hope that they will develop their skills and move up to our senior teams.

A farewell match was held on August 19th for Chan Hing-kai who will be leaving Hong Kong this month. This was followed by a dinner at Recreio where those who were able to attend all had a good time. Once again, we will miss Sai Kai.

Prior to that farewell match, the two men's university teams played against each other so that the hockey committee could see them in action, after which committee members who were present welcomed the players to the club. Convenor Vasco da Costa later told me, "They seemed very happy to be playing for Recreio".

Player registration has begun. In order to meet the growing costs of running the hockey section, players will be asked to contribute a bit more than usual for the season. Please bring your money and your player card to the Danny Yu at the Recreio office immediately.

The hockey section's Annual General Meeting will be held on a date to be decided.

International Hockey In Hong Kong 1

The 6th Asia Cup Women's Hockey Championship will be held at King's Park from September 1st to 9th inclusive. Hong Kong faces Korea, Chinese Taipei and Japan in Pool B, while Pool A features China, India, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

China will get the show on the road at 2:30 pm on September 1st when they take on Malaysia, to be followed by your hosts Hong Kong who face Japan at 6:00 pm. Singapore and Thailand bring the curtain down on the opening day when they bully off at 8:00 pm.

Recreio is proudly represented in the Hong Kong squad by goalie Queenie Ho and forward Candy Cheung.

"Uh, Rennie, there's a chunk of time missing before the 6:00 pm match".

Can't get a thing past you, can we? The official opening ceremony is scheduled to begin at 4:15, between the first and second games, so lots to see and do.

Free entry. First come first served. Food and beverages will be on sale at the ground.

International Hockey In Hong Kong 2

As a kind of curtain-raiser to the Asia Cup, the New Zealand Ladies' (the Black Sticks) played a series of matches at King's Park in the last week of August.

They opened their tour with a 4-0 win over Hong Kong, then came down to Earth when the Koreans drubbed them 6-0, all the goals coming in the first half.

They managed to score twice against China who beat them 5-2, and rounded off their visit to Hong Kong by defeating India 2-0, although I was very disappointed with the umpiring that seemed to favour New Zealand.

Pictorial Stroll - Yau Ma Tei and Jordan

On the way to the NZ vs India game, my son and I took a stroll through Yau Ma Tei and Jordan and through Recreio to buy a prego. Wouldn't you know it? We ate the darn thing before I thought about taking a picture of it. Maybe next time.

Pics and two video clips have been uploaded to Webshots.com

Need A Magician?

I recently completed a TESOL course, and one of the volunteer students was a magician by the name of Vincent Chong. I had great fun teaching him and watching him do a couple of tricks. If you'd like to have Vincent perform at a function, you can contact him via email:
