Sometimes I hear people struggling to master the English language, and I am reminded of these gems. How the heck are they supposed to grasp the language when they have to try and remember all of these?

"ough"

Let's start with "ough" and add an "r".

Rough (ruff).

Then add a "t" so that you get trough (troff), as in "a trough of low pressure".

Add an "h" to make it through (thru).

Or else, there's thought (thot), that sounds nothing like though (tho) or the bough (bow) of a tree.

"ove"

Another favorite of mine is the "ove" combination.

You could find cover in a cove if you move like a dove.

"ow" and "augh"

Ever see a cow trying to mow a lawn?

Laugh and slaughter rhyme with draught and daughter.

Other funny stuff

If you lead, you have to take the lead out of your pants.

Is there anything worse than a losing horse?

And when you tear your shirt, does it bring a tear to your eye?

Finally, we all remember that it is "i" before "e" except after "c" (unless you're a scientist)!

And don't forget that ghoti is pronounced fish.
