Men's Hockey

It's been a funny old month of January for Recreio hockey, with the "A" team winning both their scheduled matches, scoring nine goals and conceding two in the process. Marc Robson grabbed five of those nine, but his appearance at the top of the goal-scoring table was brief as Andy Kan also scored five in January to reclaim the lead. You would think that Andy's five goals in three games would mean good results for the "C" team, but that was not the case: two draws and two losses (8 goals for, 15 against!) can only be described as mediocre, especially when one of those losses was the result of a lack of players. Thirty are registered: only nine showed up. The "B" team continue to struggle in Division 2 and were very unlucky to concede late goals in their 0-1 defeats against Khalsa and Valley.

We are pleased to welcome to the "C" team a new standby goalie in the person of Brian Leung. This is Brian's first year as a keeper, but he showed his potential in the match against Shaheen B when he came on in the second half. We are just as pleased to discover that Ricky D is also an outstanding goalie, and has proven himself on three occasions while Henrique Souza has been away. Ricky's daredevil performances helped achieve those two draws against teams that might otherwise have beaten us if we'd had anyone else standing in for Suzi.

Ladies' Hockey

While the men struggled, the women breezed through the month of January, and why not? The dedication shown by coach Mike Franco has begun to pay off as the Ladies "A" team won their two scheduled games. The Ladies' "B" team, meanwhile, only had one match to play in January, and newcomer Anita Ho scored the winner.

Your editor is puzzled by the decision of the Hong Kong Hockey Association Women's Section to wipe away all first round results and start the second half of the season with a clean slate. Does that mean the 19 points picked up by Recreio "A" were all for nought? Let's see what the association has to say about this, assuming they deign to acknowledge our existence.
