Recreio Hockey Newsletter - September 2005

The 2005-06 season bullies off on October 2nd with the Men's C team taking to the pitch. At the moment, further information is not available. Watch this page for updates.

Over the summer, the Ladies' A team traveled to Malaysia to take part in an invitation tournament and finished a credible 3rd. As coach Mike Franco noted, they did well against most of their opponents but were left standing still by a team that was described as "Shaheen men in skirts". Such was the skill of this team that our ladies were left chasing shadows.

With the creation of a squad to select the most suitable players for the Men's A team, training sessions have been held on Wednesday evenings and weekends. It is hoped that this will be sufficient preparation for the coming season. Meanwhile, the hockey section sub-committee is pleased to announce that Lai Kwok-fai has accepted the committee's nomination as A Team captain.

Among those moving up to the "A" is former C team captain Marc Robson. Two years ago, Marc racked up 36 goals in the league and cup competitions to end the season as the top goal scorer for the club. Last year, with the responsibility of captaincy weighing heavily on his shoulders (plus the fact that he was also playing rugby), he managed only 15 goals and finished third behind Karen Ho and Andy Kan. With the captaincy passing on to someone else, and with no rugby injuries to worry about this season, Recreio A will be hoping that Marc (looking a lot fitter and slimmer than last year) regains his goal-scoring form.

A little twist
If you recall, the Ladies' B team finished last season in 3rd place in the league, losing out to Valley C (and therefore, on promotion) on goal difference. That meant another season in Division 3, or so we thought. At the annual Hockey Association Dinner in June, Valley were presented with the runners-up trophy. Sometime between then and our A.G.M. on July 29th, the Hockey Association decided to deduct a point from Valley C so that they dropped down to third place, allowing CDR B to be promoted. Your editor and a few others find this fishy, and we are all looking forward to hearing what the association has to say about this.

Was it a plot by Valley C to avoid having to play in Division 2? Did they get too carried away at the dinner and so incurred the point deduction? Let's hope we find out before too long.

In he meantime, both ladies' teams will begin the new season in Division 2.

More Minchee

You may recall that a number of former Recreio players and friends gathered in Vancouver in 2003 for a memorial golf tournament for Francis "Gogo" Gomes. That event came to be known as the Minchee gathering.

A second such event, More Minchee, is now being planned for 2006 in Hawaii. Click on "More Minchee" in the External Links below for more details and a bit of fun.

League Tables

The league tables that appeared on this home page in the latter part of last season have been moved to their own section. Click on "Tables" below throughout the season to see how our teams are doing.
