Recreio Hockey Newsletter - April 2005

Updated - 25 April 2005

Congratulations all around to the five Recreio hockey teams for a most satisfactory season, and it's not over yet. All five teams have finished in the top three of their respective divisions.

Recreio A scored a 1-0 victory over Valley D this past weekend thanks to Leung Sai to end the season on 43 points. They were in with a chance of promotion to Division 1, but 144U A ended up as division champions, pushing the A's down to third place.

Recreio B took on the gritty Police A and emerged 1-0 winners through Lai Chi Kai, giving them 35 points and third place in Division 3.

In a game where it didn't matter if they won or lost, Recreio C played to a 2-2 draw against Dragons A, Ricky D scoring late in the game with his back to the goal and pushing the ball between his legs. Andy Kan also added to his tally, but he will finish second in the goal scorers' table. The C's finish on 37 points in second place, and are eligible for promotion to Division 2 next season.

The ladies have gone through to the finals of their respective knockout competitions, both of which will be played at King's Park this Saturday (April 30th). Bully-off times need to be confirmed, but it's likely to be 15:00 and 16:30.

CDR A can thank Andi Lee for scoring the winner in the semis against KCC B, while CDR B went through on penalty strokes after a gutsy performance against Unicorns ended goalless. CDR B captain Mandy Lui was very pleased with stand-in goalie Maxine Ho, who kept out the opposition. The B team scorers were Carol Lo, So Wing Yiu, and Karen Ho, whose 17 goals so far this season make her the Club's top goal scorer.

Our Portuguese Heritage

The more time I spend reading the various Macanese websites, the more un-Portuguese I feel. I can't speak the language, know hardly anyone mentioned at the various sites, and have never visited Portugal. Thankfully, humor is universal and I can share that with everyone else here.

From one of our featured external links, "Diaspora Macaense em America", comes this little gem. You'll find it by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page, then scroll down and click on "The Way It Was" at the Diaspora site.

Chicken Soup for Bankers
By Oscar Collaço [from Diaspora Macaense em America]

I was working for a major bank in the financial district and was looking for a quick place to order a bowl of soup and a sandwich before attending evening classes offered by the bank. There was this cozy short-order place on Market St. near Sansome named 'Ole King Cole'. It was a buffet type restaurant. When it came to my turn in line, I ordered a sandwich with chicken soup, then heard the person behind me ordering split-pea soup. I had never heard of this soup and asked the person behind me if it was good. He told me that it was better than chicken soup, so I asked the expressionless waitress behind the counter to change my order of chicken soup to split-pea soup, at which she immediately put her head through the small window and in a loud voice hollered, "Hold the chicken and make it pea". There was a thunderous laughter that erupted from all of us within earshot. Even the busy poker-faced waitress began to smile after that.

I must say that the split-pea soup was excellent.

Jokes

Socrates & Sinatra; say the color, not the word; women; and insults.

Vasco & Dado

Vasco and my brother Dado finally got around to checking their email, and sent in a bunch of stuff. They each have their own page this month.

Monday Fodder

This could have gone into the "Jokes" page, but I felt it deserved its own section.

Birthdays and anniversaries

Those who will be celebrating their birthdays or anniversaries in April include:
