Recreio Hockey Newsletter - September 2004

F I H

After publishing this for a year, it finally occured to me that the home page of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) was never included. We will remedy that from this month forwards, and you will find the link at the bottom of the page, next to that of the Hong Kong Hockey Association.

Training & League

Well, the good intention was there. We got as far as finding a qualified physical trainer who was willing to put in the time to get us ready for the coming season, but it didn't work out. Pity. Click on "Hockey Training" below for more.

Meanwhile, the Men's league is set to bully off on September 26th. The details are not yet available, but we'll get them into this newsletter as soon as we find out.

More Beautiful Pictures

After posting last month's set of beautiful pictures, I went on a hunt for more and found a whole bunch. I hope you like them as much as I do.

More Voices From The Past

Last month, Horatio and Oscar wrote to say Hi to everyone. This month, Edriz and Toneco dropped by with a few lines. Here's what Edriz Slater (nee Oliveira) said:

"I am once against 'chairwoman of the hockey club in hellevoetsluis, The Netherlands, with 550 members. The hockey site is www.hcvoorne.nl"
[editor's note: best viewed with Internet Explorer. It didn't load properly in Mozilla, and Opera caused it to freeze]

"Two of my daughters also play for the Ladies 1st team (1st class hockey) and the other one in Girls A1 (first class top).

If anyone from Hong Kong or the 'balichung' community visits Holland, they are more than welcome for a game. I am still playing for the semi veterans ... as mid forward (used to be full back at Recreio in my previous life).

I guess no matter where we are, our hearts are still at Recreio and the wonderful times we had there when we were young and I am so glad that you are all still keeping up the spirit.

And Tony Jorge (Toneco) da Silva wrote:

I am excited to see the Recreio Hockey newsletter. As an ex-player and member of Club de Recreio I am pleased to be included in your list. We may not have met, but I did play for the club in the late 50s and as a guest player in the 70s and even 80s.

You are right. I did host the 1982 Recreio visit to San Francisco. Did you know that those friendly games between Recreio and the Macaense community started a hockey club which is now the Lusitano club of California with about 300 members? The Lusitano team played for 3 years in the San Francisco Bay Area league and was one of the top 3 teams? Ask Eddie Vas, Tony or Mike Delgado.

When I have time, after my house construction project, I will dig up a few photographs, which is in storage now, and send it to you.

Best wishes for the coming season.

[editor: Thanks, Toneco. We're looking forward to those pics]

Jokes

This month we look at the two ends of the Information Superhighway, and get a totally different view of those little emoticons. ;-D There's also a separate page taken from a Home Economics book of the 60s. And we dare you to take the geek test to see if you're a geek.

IceRed

There is a Website that I occasionally like to visit, called IceRed. It describes itself as "The community for university alumni and professionals", where you are encouraged to "Engage in lively and candid discussions with your peers".

Yeah, right.

Not Psalm 23

"The Lord is my Shephard, I shall not want". You recognize that, I'm sure. If you're not easily offended, and you look like I do, you might enjoy "Pound 23".

Police Dogs

I was chatting with my sister in California about police dogs, and it seems these wonderful animals survive on public handouts. Click on the K9 link at the bottom of the page to find out how you can help to help them keep crime off the streets.

Birthdays and anniversaries

Those celebrating birthdays or anniversaries in September include:

I'm happy to report that Michelle is alive and well in Hawaii. I hadn't heard from her since the Minchee gathering last summer (14 months ago!) and was getting a bit worried. ^!^

Archives

Every month, we add to our archives of newsletters. If you've missed any editions, or would like to re-read something from past publications, click on the Archives link below.

Please contribute

If you would like to have any images or special dates included in the newsletter, kindly write to recreio_newsletter@graffiti.net. We would love to view your pictures and know of occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, and special events or when a baby is due - anything that you would like to include in the newsletter.

Write to recreio_newsletter@graffiti.net and share your news and image files (as attachments) with the rest of us.

The Editor.
