Background
Over 23 years ago, Pirate: A Contemporary Art Oasis opened in Denver as an audacious and eclectic alternative, cooperative gallery. Today, little has changed. Many member artists have come and gone, but Pirate persists. It's an institution that remains flexible and edgy. Co-founder and Artist Phil Bender is most responsible for keeping the organization alive, working to create what is termed a state of "happy anarchy." A constant variety of shows gives viewers reason to make frequent trips.
The Space
Pirate is located in the heart of the Highlands neighborhood, at an intersection of bustling creativity occupied by two other galleries: Edge and Zip, and the Bug Theatre. Pirate's large, airy main gallery is an excellent staging area for group and special shows; meanwhile, the smaller Ilk and Treasure Chest galleries allow new and little-known artists a chance to be seen. In addition, Pirate is an excellent forum, sparking discussion and networking at its show openings. A superb grab-bag of competing styles and sensibilities, the art shown at the Pirate--closely watched by vigilant critics, collectors and curators--is often much more affordable than similar works by the same artists in downtown's commercial galleries.
